NEURAL DREAMS,
HUMAN MACHINES

ML, images, video
2014 - 2018

Neural Dreams / Human Machines is a series of experiments created during the early days of the release of the Google Deep Dream neural network tool that allowed the public access its generative and computational methods. Drawing from mass culture, the artist collected found images and footage from the public domain to run through Google Deep Dream in exploring how machines visually interpret and transform the visual culture of humans.

The artist paired Google Deep Dream with other frameworks such as OpenFrameworks in these early figurative and material experiments in exploring the limits and possibilities of neural networks as a new medium for artistic expression. In this early stage, frame-by-frame processing was manually adjusted and a short video often took several weeks to process.
